St. Constantine and Helena Church
The Church St. Constantine and Helena is located in the center of the ancient part of Plovdiv, on the ruins of the fortress wall (Akropola) and is the oldest church in the town. It was built over ruins of an existing Christian sanctuary dating back to the beginning of IV century.
The church was radical renovated in 1832 when the temple was destroyed and new one was built. The new church was one of the biggest for its time. The construction is a typical example for the church architecture of XIX-th century.
The unique church iconostasis was made by the Bulgarian master Yoan Paskulis from Metsovo in "Vienna Style". The icons in the church are work of different authors, among them Zachary Zograf and his brother Dimitar (St. Constantine and Helena, St. Virgin, Jesus Christ Almighty, St. John the Baptist and others). During the centuries the church has protected a lot of valuables of the middle age icon painting. One of them is the small wonder doing icon of St. Constantine and Helena. The local people tell a number of legends about its magical influence.
The church St. Constantine and Helen is included the list with the 100 National tourist sites of Bulgaria and is most visited by tourists Orthodox church in Plovdiv.
