Sofia Puppet Theater
The Puppet Theatre in Sofia is the first puppet theatre in Bulgaria. It was founded in 1946 by Mara Penkova that put her own money for its creation.
The first performance was "Tatuncho and the Dragon", played on April 21, 1946. In 1948 the Government created a state subsidy for the theater (that makes it the first officially-recognized professional state theater in Bulgaria) and the theater is called the Central Puppet Theatre.
In 60s of XX century are the theater’s golden era. There were lots of highly successful performances - "King Marko" (1967), "Pinocchio" (1968), "The Watchmaker" (1965), "The Decameron" (1972), "Macbeth" (1996 ), "Treasure of Sylvester", "Ragazzi", "For the pea and the princess" and others.
The current salon on "General Gurko" street the theater received in 1971. It has two lobbies, audience hall, sound and lighting room, modern equipped recording studio and administrative offices. In the audience hall there are 260 seats (14 rows and 4 lodges). There is another hall at bul.Yanko Sakazov.
In 2001 became the Central Puppet Theatre became Sofia Puppet Theater. Today its annual repertoire consists of more than 20 titles, and gives more than 500 performances of high-quality performances for children and adults.
