Kumanitsa cave is located in the lands of the village of Cherni Osam (Municipality Troyan, Lovech region). It is situated in the borders of Steneto reserve (Eastern Troyan Balkan) in the narrowest and most picturesque part of the canyon, over the beautiful waterfall "Big Kazan".
The cave entranceis is located only a meter above the level of the river and is 2.5 x 2 5 meters. In the spring, when the snow melts or there are heavy rains entry into the cave is impossible because of the vast amount of water that flows through the canyon through it.
The cave is crawled and mapped for the first time in 1962 by cavers from the students from Caving Club "Academic" (Sofia).
The total length of discovered till now galleries is 1656 m, and the displacement is 104 m.
In the two main galleries of the cave flowing rivers, which are then merged. The routes in the cave follow the path of underground rivers, passing through thresholds, waterfalls, large halls, galleries with beautiful cave formations as natetsi, draperies, stalactites, stalagmites, sinter lakes, etc..
During spring snowmelt or if there are lot of waters, the cave thresholds become difficult to pass waterfalls. This makes the Kumanitsa one of the most inaccessable caves in Bulgaria. It is allowed only specialized research temas and only after an agreement by the MOSV (government organization) and the Department of National Park "Central Balkan". Violators are subject to penalties, because the cave is in the sanitary protection zone of the spring used to supply several large settlements.
