The monastery was built in XI century during the reign of King Simeon. Like most of Bulgarian monasteries and this in Kokalyane was destroyed twice during the Ottoman yoke and restored after.
There have been found several valuable documents and writings, including a famous relic - the so-called Urvich Collection, consisting of laudatory words for Archangels Michael and Gabriel written by the famous man of letters Saint Clement of Ohrid and the Kokalyansko Gospel of John Kratovski.
The complex is surrounded by a massive, two-meters in height wall and includes a church, two chapels, a bell-tower (built in 2000) and outbuildings. The church is relatively large, a single-nave construction, without a dome.

In 1969 Kokalyane monastery was declared a cultural monument.
