Medieval fortress Dragoychintsi
In Bulgarian: Средновековна крепост Драгойчинци
Category: Fortress
Location: Dragoychintsi
The remains of the medieval fortress Dragoychintsi are situated in the "Kulata" locality, 650 meters northwest of the village of Dragoychintsi (10 km from Kyustendil).
The castle was in the shape of a triangle, with tip directed to the west, where the entrance was. The Eastern wall was about 180 m long and the other two sides - about 250 meters. There are clear traces from remains of square rooms, located next to each other, which outer walls form a second - internal wall.
The road to the fortress was from northwest. There was a ditch with width from 3 to 5 meters and depth - 3 meters. The other sides of the fortress were inaccessible because of steep slopes.
For the construction of the fort were used beams. An evidence for this are the remains from the rectangular tower and the walls. The preserved parts of western and southern walls are about 1 to 1.5 meters wide and 8-12 meters high. The size of the entrance tower was 11 to 7 meters.
By the end of XIX century there were preserved remains of a Christian church, fountain and other buildings, but later they were destroyed by treasure hunters and the locals.
In the area of the fortress were found iron tools and copper coins. According an information from the local people in 1936 here was found part of the iron door of the castle tower.
