The Rozhen Monastery "Rozhdestvo Bogorodichno" ("Nativity of the Mother of God") is located west of village of Rojen. It is the biggest monastery in Pirin mountain and is very well preserved until today. It was built by the Melnik ruler despot Despot Alexius Slav during the XII-th or XIII-th century. In its current appearance the monastery is from XVII century when it was restored after a fire.
The monastery reached its apogee in the XIX-th century, when it was a regional centre of Orthodox Christianity and owned a lot of land in the area.
The main church "Holy Virgin" was built before the XV-th century and painted in the end of XVI-th century. Above the church entrance there is an image of Christ Pantocrator together with the twelve apostles and there is an inscription of the year of its painting - 1597. Other valuable paintings are the images of "Doomsday", "Jacob`s Ladder", scenes from the life of John the Baptist (painted in 1622) and others.
