Region around Melnik is rich of an unique nature phenomenon - the sandstones pyramids. They can be seen in the land of town of Melnik and villages of Karlanovo, Rojen and Sushitsa.
The Pyramids are very impressive, reaching a height of 100 meters. The rock formations are located at an altitude of 350 to 850 meters and are constructed of low-solder sandstones and conglomerates with Neogene-Quaternary age.
The Sandstones pyramids in the region of Melnik have been declared a natural monument in 1960, with protected area of total 1165 ha. They are assessed as a geological phenomenon with a global value.
