Karanovska Settlement mound is located in the northwestern edge of the village Karanovo (Sliven district). It was formed from the ruins of successively built on each other prehistoric settlements and is one of the biggest mounds in Bulgaria.
The Karanovskata mound was inhabited in the Neolithic, Chalcolithic and Bronze Ages. Studies have identified 7 cultural layers: the first four lower layers (I-IV) refer to the Neolithic, the next (V-VI) - to the Chalcolithic and the top (VII) - to the end of Early Bronze Age.
In Karanovska mound were found well preserved foundations of buildings and lots of home furnishings and tools made of stone, flint, bone, deer horn, brass and others. Very valuable are the clay tablets with signs (pintaderi) found there, which according some scientists are the oldest known written chars in Europe.
