The fortress "Kaleto" is located 2 km southwest from the center of today`s town of Sredets (Burgas region). It was built at the end of V - beginning of VI century. The bloom of the castle is in IX - X century, under the name Potamukastel. The fortress was destroyed in XI century but rebuilt again in the XII century.
During the Ottoman rule the population gradually left the fortress and settled east of it, where a new settlement was created - Karabunar (from Turkish "Black well") at the place where the modern town of Sredets is situated.
