Monument - The victory of Simeon the Great in 917, Aheloy

This monument in the town of Aheloy was unveiled in August 2007 on the occasion of 1090 years from the glorious victory in the 917 of the Bulgarian Tsar Simeon the Great over the Byzantines, led by their military commander Leo Phocas.

The battle remains in the history as the "Battle of Aheloy". After the defeat of the Byzantine army in this battle Bulgaria became a major factor in the region and one of the most important states in Europe along with Byzantium.
