The Museum of the skis and ski-sports in Chepelare is unique for Bulgaria. It is housed in the building of the community center "Rhodopska Iskra" in the town. The museum was opened in 1998, after the great Bulgarian biathlete Ekaterina Dafovska won the gold medal at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. Dafovska was born and began his training in the ski-sport here in the town of Chepelare and her Olympic title was initiated the opening of such a museum in the town.
The idea for the creation of the museum belongs to Dimitar Raychev, a teacher and public figure, who is also the founder of the Rhodope Karst Museum in Chepelare. Among the first donors and founders of the museum are still current and former skiers, the Municipality of Chepelare and ski factory in the town.
The museum collection consists over 700 different exhibits that show the evolution of winter sports and skiing in the region, the sport history of some great individuals from Chepelare, who contributed to the development of these sports here. There are lots of interesting facts about some of the most successful Bulgarian athletes in winter sports - Ekaterina Dafovska, Shinka Kutsinova, Krastana Stoeva, Evangelina Peshinska, Mitko Hadjiev, Borislav Kiryakov, Radosrav Yankov, Dimitar Gerdjikov and others.
