"Asenova krepost" (aka "Stanimahos" or "Petrich") is a medieval fortress located 2-3 km south of the town of Asenovgrad. It lies on on a high rocky ridge in Rhodopes mountain, on the left bank of the Asenitsa River.
According to archaeologists a stronghold was existed there from times of the Thracians 5-4 BC, and later was inhabited and used during the Roman and early Byzantine era. The fortress gained importance in the Middle Ages and its name is connected with the name of the great Bulgarian ruler Tsar Ivan Assen II who in 1231 made it more stronger.
One of the best preserved and most notable feature of Asenova krepost is the Holy Theotokos of Petrich (Sveta Bogoroditsa Petrichka) Church from the XII-XIII century.
