The monastery St. Kirik and Julita (aka Gornovodenski monastery) is situated west of town of Asenovgrad, in the middle of beautiful broad-leaved forest, in the north slopes of Rodopes Mountain. It is the largest monastery in Rhodopes mountain.
Probably, the monastery was built in XIV century in its existence it was destroyed and restored several times. In its current appearance it is from 1819.
The monastery complex consists of a church St.Petka and massive two-storey buildings around it. The church dates back to 1850 and was built on the model of Bachkovo "Church of the Assumption". It is large three-hall, one-dome temple with a narthex. The frescoes in the church are mainly by the painter Alexi Atanasov but there are also icons painted by Zahari Zograf.
From the middle of the XIX century the monastery belonged to the Greeks until the 1930, when it became Bulgarian property again.In 1943-1944 the property was turned into a concentration camp "St. Kirik". After a large reconstruction, in 1985 the monastery was turned into a rest and art base of the Bulgarian Union of Architects. Nowadays it is used as a hotel.
