On May 17 municipality of Batak celebrates its public holiday, dedicated to the heroes of the April Uprising of 1876. During the uprising, after two weeks of uneven battle with innumerable Turkish army, were killed five thousand of the six-thousand inhabitants of Batak and the town was burned to the ground. Two thousand people, who gathered in "Sveta Nedelya" church, were cruelly slaughtered after 3-day heroic defense.
The tragic fate and sacrifice of Batak help the world community to know about Bulgaria and its desire for freedom.
The celebrations in the town include a memorial service in church-ossuary St. Nedelya, laying of wreaths at the main strongholds of the insurgents, festive fireworks and gala at "Osvobojdenie" ("Liberation") square.
