 Medieval fortress in Gradishteto locality

About 4 km north of the village of Pchelarovo (in Gradishteto locality at the right side of the road to Haskovo, after the fork to the village of Petelovo) were found remains of a fortress. The facility dates from the Middle Ages, but archaeological excavations of the site have revealed that it was built on the foundations of much older cultural stratum - dated to 3500 BC. (The Stone - Copper Age).
Pchelarovo fortress has a form of an ellipse with diameters 75 and 22 meters. It is situated at not so high, but dominating over its environment, hill. From the West and south the fort was naturally protected by steep cliffs. The most accessible was the north side and there was built a wall, which was 32 meters in length and 1.2 - 1. 5 meters thick. The wall was built of roughly shaped boulders cemented with mud. It started from a cliff in south and continued in a northerly direction, making somewhere in its middle curve to north-east. In this turn was built a semicircular tower with diameter about 3.4 meters.
In the area of the castle are not disclosed buildings, except a small construction in the south part, which supposedly was a chapel. Outside the fort were discovered other archaeological sites - a medieval necropolis (close to the river), remains of monastery foundations, parts of an ancient road, prehistoric mounds and others.
The Fortress near Pchelarovo was declared a cultural monument of local importance.
