The ruins of the Late-Antique and Early-Byzantine fortress Augusta are located in in the Kaleto area of northwestern Danube River Valley, between towns of Mizia and Kozloduy, around 3 kilometers north of village of Harlets. Kaleto is an area offering favorable natural and geographical conditions of life and protection. The fortress is located at the left riverbank of Ogosta River and occupies an area of about 8 000 m2.
The first archaeological excavations of Augusta were held in the period 1973-1990. In 2005 they were restored by the National Museum of History with the active cooperation of the Kozloduy Municipality. The archaeologists found that based on the camp Ala Augusta, yet in the II-nd century the town center Augusta progressed here. In its almost 600 years long history Augusta was often attacked, demolished and raised again.
The last destruction is dated to the year 582, after an Avar invasions. In the XII-th century a Slav settlement was established over the ruins of the destroyed town.
In 1984 Augusta was declared an archaeological preserved site under the name "Antique Fortress Augusta in the Kaleto district near the village of Harlets, Vratsa region".
