Baba Vida fortress is one of the major attractions of the town of Vidin. It is one of the few entirely preserved medieval castle in Bulgaria. It is is situated on a big curve of the river Danube in the northeast part of the town. Its construction was started in X century at the place of an Ancient Roman watchtower called Bononia.
The fortress consists of 2 fundamental walls and 4 towers. It was main defensive installation during the course of the Middle Ages and the most important fortress of northwestern Bulgaria.
