Varna Archaeological Museum was founded in 1887 by brothers Herman and Karel Shkorpil. The museum is housed in an old, new-renaissance styled building, which dating back to the end of XIX century - the former Girls` High School in Varna.
The museum occupies an area of 2150 sq. meters and there are expositions, a Library and an Educational Children`s Museum. The main museum sections are: Prehistory, Antiquity, Middle Ages, Church arts. Accents: There is displayed an Eneolithic treasure dating back to 4200-4600 BC. It was discovered in 1972 near Varna and consists of jewelry and bracelets. In the gold alloys has a purity of 13 to 23 carats with a total weight about 6 kg. This is the oldest gold in the world.
Varna Archaeological Museum is included in the list of hundred tourist sites Bulgaria.
