Kabiyuk (from Turkish - bulge, mound) is a complex of mounds (one ot them is primary and bigger) and archaeological sites around them. It is located in the lands of Konyovets village, 12 km northeast of town of Shumen and 10 km west of archaeological site Pliska. In the beginning of XX century there have been found remains of an early medieval stronghold and settlement with area size about 3500 decares - the second largest after Pliska (23,000 decares).
Because the different disposition of the burial mounds (arranged in a regular quadrilateral) it is assumed that objects have not Thracian origin and dated back to the pagan period of the First Bulgarian State.
After the researches made at one of the mounds there was discovered a tomb of young man buried with his ceremonial belt (adorned with silver accessories). In the grave were found also two gold earrings (as the aristocratic fashion in these times), short iron sword, parts of horse armor and silver ornaments of horse-trappings. This is the first tomb of proto-Bulgarian aristocrat, discovered in Bulgaria and there is hope and suggestion that Kabiyuk is the place where the Bulgarian khans were buried.
Unfortunately, the treasure-hunters were destroyed lots of stone blocks, containing ancient signs and symbols. After their digs there were revealed foundations of a large stone building which measuring 20x40 meters - an evidence for the existence of massive ancient constructions.
The municipality has decided to ask for a status of Cultural and Archaeological object of Kabiyuk site and the area to be guarded by the police until the start of the offical archaeological excavations.
