The "Bridge of Friendship" (also called "Danube Bridge") is a bridge over the Danube river between Bulgaria and Romania. It connects the cities of Rousse (on the Bulgarian side) and Giurgiu (from Romanian). Currently (2011) this is the only bridge between the two countries on their nearly 500 km long river boundary. Under construction is the Danube Bridge 2 (near Vidin) and there are plans for Danube Bridge 3.
The "Danube bridge" was designed by V. Andreev and was officially opened on June 20, 1954. Construction lasts two years (1952-1954) and in this time it was the largest combined (with rail and road traffic) bridge in Europe.
The is 2,8 km long and 30 m. high above the water surface of the river. The middle part of the bridge is mobile so it could be lifted in cases of big ships crossing the river.
