The locality of Stalpishte (old Turkish name Dekili tash) is located near Danube river, 2km. northwest of village of Mechka (Ruse district). The name of the region is related to the two towering stone pillars located there, which are dating from the Mesozoic era. They have unique forms of lion`s head. The site can be reached both - by road and by the river.
The rock formations are different in shape and size. The larger stone is 12 meters in height and other is 2.5 m. It is assumed that in Roman times the big one was used as a watchtower.
The most plausible version about occurrence of the interesting rocks is that millions of years ago there was a high, hilly area, which subsequently collapsed and washed away by the river Danube and only the most durable and solid rock are remained.
Along the scientific explanations about occurrence of the rocks, there are many legends related to them. One of them is related to Krali Marko - a very strong man, character from Bulgarian folklore. This is the reason the biggest rock to be called also "Kralimarkovski stone".
According to another legend, the two stones are remains of an ancient stone bridge.
